Saakashvili persona non grata for Russia - Medvedev

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has called Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili "persona non grata." "We will get back to normal and fully-fledged relations with Georgia sooner or later, I am sure.

20:16 / 17.02.2010 There is no other way. But I personally will not have any dealings with the current Georgian president. He is a persona non grata for Russia," Medvedev said at a joint press conference with Abkhaz President Sergei Bagapsh in Moscow.

Despite that, "we have always had and will always have the friendliest feelings for the Georgian people," Medvedev said.

"Even the grave conflict that broke out in 2008 will after all fail to spoil our relations, I am convinced. The Saakashvili regime, Georgia’s governing regime, is directly responsible for what happened," Medvedev said.

The Russian president described the bloodshed of civilians incited by the Georgian side as a crime and said that it "must be given an appropriate legal assessment."

"The political meaning of those events is definitely clear to a huge number of honest and decent people. Despite all attempts made by the Georgian side, everyone understands who started what and who was seeking what," Medvedev said.

The Georgian people must decide on their own within the set constitutional procedures, who can run the state and who can lead Georgia to prosperity and normal and friendly relations with neighboring countries - Russia and Abkhazia, Medvedev said.

Bagapsh agreed with Medvedev.

"We will not have anything in common with the current Georgian leadership. It’s not talks that must be conducted with Saakashvili, but verdicts must be passed on him for everything he has done against the Ossetian and Abkhaz peoples, and against his own people," Bagapsh said.
