Azerbaijan’s State Committee for Religious Associations issues statement on incident between believers and police

Azerbaijan’s State Committee for Religious Associations issued a statement on the incident happened between the believers and police in Baku on February 13.

19:04 / 15.02.2010 The statement says that the march from Fuzuli square towards the Martyrs’ Alley on the occasion of death of Prophet Muhammad is an attempt planned by a group of persons to cause confrontation in the public and violate the atmosphere of tolerance.
“The violation of public order by a small group under the pretext of religion is illegal. Therefore, the illegal action was prevented by the law-enforcement bodies. The choice of faith is respected in Azerbaijan, but the promotion of religious extremism, ideas of religious intolerance is inadmissible. The attempts of a group of persons to call people to radicalism using religion for political purposes, damage the traditions of tolerance of our people and abuse of freedom of religion are inadmissible.”
