Conference “Caucasian Security: old landscape in new environment” takes place in Baku

15:23 / 11.12.2009 Conference “Caucasian Security: old landscape in new environment” has been held in Baku today, APA reports. Representatives from Azerbaijan, Turkey, Georgia, Iran, US and Norway, ambassadors of a number of countries accredited in Azerbaijan attended the conference organized by the Norwegian Atlantic Committee.

Norwegian ambassador to Azerbaijan Jon Ramberg said his country had always made efforts to ensure peace in the world and the efforts were continuing. The ambassador said stability in the Caucasus was of great importance for Europe and Asia.

Professor of the National Defense University Roger Kangas said energy security was very important for the world. Roger Kangas made a speech on the theme “Open Routes and Market forces: The US perspectives on Energy and Transportation in the South Caucasus” in the panel “The Economic and Energy dimensions of the Caucasian security”. He said Georgian war in 2008 revealed the urgency of the issue. The expert said the region played an important role as a transport and energy corridor in uniting Europe and Asia, the US supported security in the region and the regional projects.

The role of energy, transport, economic projects, particularly Nabucco project in the security of the Caucasus, energy security, relations with other countries, Turkey’s policy on opening of borders, geopolitical interests were discussed at the conference.
