Turkey’s court allows lawsuit against Orhan Pamuk

17:23 / 12.10.2009 Turkey’s Supreme Court of Appeals ruled that Nobel Laureate Orhan Pamuk can be sued for remarks against the Turkish state. “Thirty-thousand Kurds and a million Armenians have been killed in Turkey”, Pamuk was quoted as saying in a Swiss magazine in 2005. Nationalist activists filed suit against Pamuk, saying his remarks had insulted them and demanding compensation, but Shishli district court has rejected the case saying that those who filed suit were not hurt by Pamuk’s words individually. But the higher court ruled that the case should be heard again. Not only Pamuk, but also other persons, who will slander Turkey, are expected to go on trial further.
Orhan Pamuk received Nobel Prize after those words. Some Turkish people say that he was awarded not for his works, but just for his slanders against the Turkish government and people. Orhan Pamuk is living in New York now.
