Shukru Elekdag: “Turkish parliament should get rid of the protocols signed with Armenia”

13:30 / 05.03.2010 Shukru Elekdag, former Turkish ambassador to the US, member of the Turkish parliamentary delegation observing the discussion of the Armenian lies in the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, called the adoption of the resolution “Pyrrhic victory”, APA reports quoting Anadolu Agency. Representative of the Republican People’s Party Shukru Elekdag noted that the “Armenian genocide” resolution was accepted by a one-vote margin and added that it was a blow to the image of the committee chairman Berman and those who supported the draft resolution.
“Yes, they accepted the draft resolution, but also lost much of their pride and prestige,” he said.

Elekdag said Barack Obama did not make an effort to prevent the draft, the statement made at the very last minute was useless. According to the diplomat, the Jewish lobby did not support Turkey, despite all this the draft resolution was accepted by a one-vote margin, if Barack Obama had give a little support, the draft resolution would not have pass.

Touching on Turkey’s recalling its US ambassador Namik Tan, Shukru Elekdag mentioned that when the Armenian lie was accepted in the committee in 2007, the government recalled its ambassador.
“The government must pursue strong policy. There must be a continuation of such a step. U.S. Secretary of Commerce is to visit Turkey in ten days. Will he visit or not? Early in April our Prime Minister is to leave for the US to attend the meeting on the nuclear problems. Will he leave or not? The further steps should be taken,” he said.

Touching on the protocols signed with Armenia Shukru Elekdag stated that to bring the protocols to the agenda of the Turkish parliament after the decision of Armenian Constitutional Court would mean to accept the “genocide” claims and Armenia’s territorial claims for Turkey’s Eastern Anatolia.
“I think after that the protocols have lost their importance. But America’s pressure will continue as the protocols are in the Turkish parliament. So, there are two ways. We should either bring the protocols to the agenda of the Turkish parliament’s commission on foreign affairs and reject, or we should do what the Armenian Constitutional Court has done. We should get rid of the protocols. If the protocols remain in the Turkish parliament, we will draw pressures on us,” he said.
