Minister: Active member of “Forest brothers” armed group, who participated in terror attack on Abu-Bakr mosque, has been detained and brought to Azerbaijan
“Effective measures were taken in Azerbaijan to reveal, prevent intelligence of foreign intelligence agencies in time.
12:50 / 19.03.2010 25 persons engaged in intelligence against Azerbaijan by the order of foreign intelligence agencies were rendered harmless in 2009, court passed judgments on 17 of them,” Minister of National Security, Lieutenant-General Eldar Mahmudov said in his interview to the Azerbayjan newspaper.
Minister said anti-terrorist activities were being carried out by the ministry’s structures to protect Azerbaijan from terror threat.
“49 persons accused of committing terrorist acts in the republic were detained, a great deal of weapons and explosives were seized from them. As a result of the measures taken against international terrorism, radical religious 31-member group planning terror attacks was rendered harmless. Preventive measures were taken against the criminal groups planning contract murders,” he said.
Eldar Mahmudov noted that the Ministry of National Security held accountable a group of Azerbaijanis, who left for the uncontrolled territories of Afghanistan and Pakistan, participated in the operations with Al-Qaeda and Taliban groups.
“The criminal cases of 18 of them were submitted to court, 4 are wanted. Wanted member of “Forest brothers” armed group, who participated in the terror attack on Abu-Bakr mosque in August, 2008, has been recently detained abroad and brought to the country,” he said.
The Ministry of National Security is successively continuing the work in the field of combating drug trafficking, illegal migration, human trafficking, money laundering, cyber-crimes and other organized crimes, the minister said. “We are approaching the issue of combating illicit drug trafficking from several prisms. We consider drug addiction as a trouble severely hurting our gene bank and use all methods to struggle it. Not only the government agencies and public organizations, but all society should be concerned about this trouble. Drug trafficking is also in the focus of attention as the main source for funding the terrorism 32 transnational drug trafficking organizations were prevented last year and totally 1.141 tons of narcotics were confiscated. 114 people were brought to justice for 38 criminal cases launched on these facts. Serious facts of illegal migration, human trafficking and falsification of documents were identified and investigated.
The attempts of misappropriation, sale and removal of cultural pieces, valuable and antique things were prevented”.
