Presentation of 3G technology held in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan’s youngest and fast-developing mobile operator Azerfon has held a presentation of 3G mobile technology for the first time in the country.

14:39 / 16.12.2009 Mr. Guido Helbich, CEO of Azerfon LLC, said that 3G services will be available under the Azerfon-Vodafone brand through 077prefix.

In his words, Azerfon-Vodafone subscribers can use 3G services in 72 countries worldwide.

The UMTS standard-based service will allow data rate of 284 kbps.

Initially, Azerfon-Vodafone subscribers will use the rate of 3.6 kbps with the coverage of Baku, Sumgait, Ganja, Shirvan, Nakhichevan, Mingachevir, Sheki, Tovuz, Shamkir and the Absheron Peninsula in the country.

Launched commercial operation in 2007, Azerfon services 1.5 million subscribers in 80% of Azerbaijani territory.
Azerfon entered into a non-equity partnership with Vodafone in 2009. It got a 3G license form the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies on December 1, 2009.
