PACE President: “I completely rule out use of force in solution to Nagorno Karabakh conflict”

12:52 / 27.01.2010 Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) President Luis Maria de Puig held a press conference in Strasbourg on the end of his mission in this post. The PACE President mentioned important events happened during his two-year activity and spoke about the PACE’s role in this period.

Luis Maria de Puig noticed the Georgian-Russian conflict as the most important problem of the past period. He said the organization held intensive discussions on this issue for several times and PACE made strong efforts to approach the two countries and established special working group for that.

PACE President told APA correspondent that this committee needs to revive its activity. “We have to try to approach positions of the two countries. I completely rule out confrontation and uses of force in the solution to Nagorno Karabakh conflict. This is position of the Council of Europe. The conflict must be solved peacefully. We have to move forward through the dialogue. The subcommittee can be important in forecasting of political decisions by the sides”. De Puig said he had no information about the identities of candidates to the post of subcommittee chairman.

PACE President said political prisoners were serious problem in Azerbaijan. “We made many steps towards the solution of this problem. I raised this issue in my meetings with President Ilham Aliyev and other officials. I can say that there were positive steps towards that, but some issues remain unresolved. We want Azerbaijan to be more democratic country. The Council of Europe is keen to assist Azerbaijan on this issue”.

Luis Maria de Puig said he would take the Senator’s post until 2012 and continue his activity as an ordinary member of PACE.
