Kurds and Azerbaijanis clash in Igdir, dozens arrested

17:55 / 26.01.2010 Arrest of the municipality chairman of the Turkey’s province of Igdir Mehmet Nuri Gunesh and seven members of Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) caused tensions in Igdir. A group of parliamentarians and municipality officials from BDP issued statement for media at first and then they broke windows of shops owned by Azerbaijanis. Police used tear gas to prevent unrests. There were disputes between the rioters and police. BDP parliamentarian threatened police that they would continue the protest action. Police asked for additional forces.

Kurdish assault against the shops of Azerbaijanis in Igdir caused mobilization among the local residents. They tried to drive out the Kurdish group. Police interfered in the situation and arrested about 40 BDP members. Additional police and gendarme forces were deployed at the city center to prevent extension of tensions to the ethnic confrontation.
