Turkish Foreign Ministry issues official statement on ambassador’s resignation

22:55 / 11.12.2009 The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey issued an official statement on the resignation of Turkish ambassador to the United States Nebi Shensoy.

“Our ambassador to the United States, honorable Nebi Shensoy expressed his wish to be appointed to the center and his requirement was accepted”, said the statement, APA reports quoting the ministry’s website.

Shensoy’s resignation was caused by the discords between him and Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. Before the Prime Minister Erdogan’s visit to the United States, Turkish Foreign Ministry instructed the ambassador to organize participation of the foreign ministers at the Erdogan-Obama meeting and to deliver Ankara’s desire to the White House, but the meeting was held in the format, which was not suitable to the Turkey’s requirement. Davutoglu strongly asked Shensoy: “The foreign ministers participated at the meeting in Turkey. Did you deliver our desire to Washington?” The minister concerned over the tone of minister’s voice and said: “No, we didn’t. If you want you may dismiss me from the office”. Following this dialogue Shensoy sent a letter of resignation to the ministry.

Shensoy was born in 1945 in Istanbul. He graduated from the British Lyceum and University. He started his diplomatic activity in 1970 and worked as a personal aide to President Turgut Ozal in 1988. He served as a Turkish ambassador in Spain and Russia and in January 2006 was appointed to the United States. Shensoy should retire in three months.
