Solemn opening ceremony of International Jazz festival held in Baku

21:47 / 25.10.2009 Solemn opening ceremony of Baku International Jazz Festival was held in Azerbaijan State Philharmonic Society on October 21, APA reports. Culture and Tourism Minister Abulfas Garayev said the international jazz festival was certainly to be held within the framework of “Baku – capital of Islamic culture - 2009”.
“Due to some reasons this festival was not held last year. If it was not held this year, this tradition in Baku would break. Therefore, the government allocated enough funds and Azerbaijan assumed this responsibility,” he said. The opening ceremony continued with the concert of Azerbaijan State Symphonic Orchestra named Uzeyir Hajibayli conducted by Fakhraddin Karimov. The concert, and performance of people’s artist Shukur Mammadov, young pianist, jazzman Emil Afrasiyaboglu were applauded. The International Jazz Festival organized by Culture and Tourism Ministry will last till October 27. Isfar Sarabski (piano), the winner of Montreux Jazz Festival, will give a concert in Baku Jazz Center today. Alexander Zinger (percussion instruments) and Ruslan Huseynov (bass) will share the stage with him.
Richard Bona and Branford Marsalis groups (US), dZihan & Kamien duo (Austria), Jazzinho (Portugal), Hard Jazz Knights (Israel), participants of the Baku International Mugham Festival Vasumathi Badrinathan (India) and Amir Elsaffar (US) have been invited to the festival.
