Ambassador Emin Yagubov: “Azerbaijan can work with Armenia bilaterally only after the liberation of its occupied lands”

17:04 / 07.05.2010 “One of the priorities of Azerbaijan’s foreign policy is the integration into Europe. Azerbaijan is establishing its relations with Europe on this basis”, Ambassador Emin Yagubov, Head of the Azerbaijan’s Permanent Mission to the European Union, told journalists. Touching upon the Eastern partnership initiative by Poland and Sweden, the diplomat said representative of the European Commission visited Azerbaijan last month to discuss this program and EU continues the discussions on this issue. The ambassador said final document on this issue was not ready yet, but it would be different from the European Neighborhood Policy and would contain concrete proposals. He said meanwhile Azerbaijan was interested in cooperation with EU in the fields of agriculture, transport and energy and wanted simplifying the visa regime for its citizens for entrance to the EU countries. All these issues were reflected in the European Neighborhood Policy program. The ambassador said one of the terms of dialogue for silmlifying the visa regime was a readmission, notably return of illegal migrants to the country. Responding the question about Azerbaijan’s interest in cooperation with other regional countries, Ambassador Yagubov reminded the Azerbaijan’s traditional position. “Azerbaijan can be ready for bilateral cooperation with Armenia only after the liberation of its occupied lands and returning of refugees and internally displaced persons to their homelands”.
