Baku hosts conference devoted to the 16th anniversary of Azerbaijan-NATO cooperation

Conference on “The role of NATO in ensuring the stability and security in Europe and in the strategic space” opens today in Baku.

16:07 / 04.05.2010 The conference has been fixed up by the organization of the Public Association of Azerbaijan" Security and Defence Sector" and NATO’s mediator – Romanian embassy in Azerbaijan. It has been devoted to the 16th anniversary of Azerbaijan-NATO cooperation and the 61st anniversary of establishment of the Alliance.

Delivering speech at the event Romanian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Nikolae Ureki said that he welcomes Azerbaijan-NATO dialogue and is trying to contribute to further enhancement of cooperation between Azerbaijan and North Atlantic alliance, because Azerbaijan wants it itself”. The Ambassador also noted that he supports Azerbaijan’s participation in NATO’s peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan. Nicholas Ureki noted that the primary purpose of such conferences - the clarification of the role and function of NATO: "We aspire to bring the role of the Alliance to the attention of Azerbaijani society. Because, as a rule, post soviet countries have superficial ideas about the alliance”.

Note that, the main purpose of the conference is to discuss the realities and perspectives of Azerbaijan-NATO cooperation. Romanian ambassador to Azerbaijan Nikolae Ureki’s “Some notes about NATO’s partnership policy”, Norwegian ambassador to Azerbaijan Jon Ramberg’s “NATO – in search of a new strategic conception”, head of the Azerbaijani-Atlantic Cooperation Association Sulhaddin Akbar’s “After Cold War period: NATO as a factor of democracy, stability and security” and lecturers of others will be heard at the event. Views will be exchanged over NATO’s relations with partner countries and New Strategic Conception. Representatives of Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry and representatives of diplomatic corps accredited in Azerbaijan, as well as local and foreign experts, several heads of NGOs attend the event.
