People leave flooded villages of Kurdamir

About 60 families living in Mollakend and Shushun villages of Kurdamir region along the Kura river left their houses on the night of May 4.

14:59 / 04.05.2010 Resident of Shushun village Baha Mikayilov told APA that the river burst its banks and knocked down the main dam.
“The houses in the village have been filled with groundwater. The people fear that the auxiliary dam will collapse and the village will be flooded. If the level of water rises 5cm, the auxiliary dam will not help. The old, women and children left the village tonight. The cattle were taken to the upper villages. The men and young people carried sand to the territory to reinforce the dam. The situation is hard,” he said.

Residents of Mollakend Gulkhar Rasulova, Oruj Mammadov, Minaya Guliyeva and Hamid Khanlarov say that 6m dam on the bank of the Kura river collapsed at 17.30 on May 3.
“Five houses, cotton-growing area were flooded, the residents of 20 houses moved. Sacks filled with sand were temporarily put on the auxiliary dam at night. We hoped that the water level will fall, but it is rising. The people fear that the village will suddenly be flooded. Our houses have been filled with water for a month. Our poultry were killed, the cattle lost.”

Representative of the region’s executive office Agamir Hasanov said the region’s administration, chiefs of departments and organizations visited Mollakend at night.
“Equipment was brought to the site and the collapse of the auxiliary dam was prevented,” he said.
