Armenia suspends process of ratification of protocols signed with Turkey

Armenian government coalition consisting of the Republican Party led by President Serzh Sargsyan, Orinats Yerkir party and Flourishing Armenia party offered to stop the process of the ratification of the protocols signed with Turkey.

14:58 / 22.04.2010 The political boards of the coalition parties issued a joint statement concerning it. The statement has been posted on the website of the Armenian parliament.

The statement says that in the recent two years with the support of the parliamentary majority President Serzh Sargsyan has taken consecutive steps to unconditionally normalize and develop Armenia-Turkey relations.
“But constructive steps of the Armenian side and expectations of the international community faced inconsistency and permanent preconditions of the Turkish side. This led into the deadlock the process of ratification of the protocols signed in Zurich on October 10, 2009,” the statement says.

According to the statement, the parliamentary majority of Armenia considers inadmissible the statements of the Turkish side, particularly of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan that make the ratification of the protocols in the Turkish parliament directly dependent on Karabakh conflict.
“The Turkish side’s refusal of ratification of the protocols within reasonable time and without preconditions shows that the ratification of these documents in the Armenian parliament is meaningless. The Armenian parliamentary majority considers that until the Turkish side is ready to continue the process without preconditions the process must be suspended and the issue removed from the agenda of the four-day meeting,” the statement says.
