The message from Turkey to Armenia

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu strongly condemned including of bill on so-called “Armenian genocide” on agenda of the US House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs.

13:42 / 09.02.2010 Davutoglu said it was not casually that the bill would be put to vote on March 4 before April 24 marked by Armenians as the day of false “genocide”, APA reports quoting Turkish newspaper Hurriyyet.

Davutoglu told journalists on his way from Munich that the decision of the Armenian Constitutional Court, Serzh Sargsyan’s destructive position in Sochi meeting of the Azerbaijani and Armenian leaders and at last including of “genocide” bill on Congress agenda show that Armenia planned it beforehand. Davutoglu expressed his concerns in his meeting with US Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg in Munich. “We told them that they can consider Congress plans as a casual case, but we can’t. The developments of recent weeks seriously concern us. Earlier Armenian Constitutional Court made comments concerning the protocols that we can’t accept it. The Armenian side stepped back from its constructive position at the Sochi meeting between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan. Now such a bill has been brought to the U.S. Congress. These three events make us think that it is not accidental. Why is this bill being discussed now? Let those using 24 April as a factor of pressure not expect us to ratify the protocols. The discussion of this bill does not serve the interests of US, Turkey or Armenia. This process may impede our bilateral relations with the US and Turkey-Armenia rapprochement process. Washington should be attentive concerning the issues that we approach sensitively,” he said.

137 out of 435 congressmen signed the bill on “genocide” presented to the House of Representatives. The bill will be put to the vote in the Committee on Foreign Affairs on March 4. If the bill is adopted, it will be included into the agenda of the House of Representatives.
