National Strike in Greece

15:25 / 11.03.2010 In Greece, public life has come to a standstill for the second time this month due to a national strike. The strike is in protest against the drastic austerity measures imposed by the Greek government.

Many governmental institutions and schools are closed, air traffic controllers, customs personnel, the police and fire fighters have stopped work and trains, public transport and even ferries are not running.

The Greek government has made far-reaching cuts to solve the country’s debt crisis. Athens is understanding of the anger about the tax rises and the freezing of pensions, but says the government has no other choice.
