Russia ready to boost Iran energy ties

11:03 / 12.05.2010 Despite fierce US disapproval of Iran’s nuclear program, Russia has voiced its readiness to help Tehran build light-water reactors, APA reports quoting official site of Press TV.

Russia helped Iran build the Bushehr nuclear reactor, which is scheduled to become operational later this year.

"We are in favor of continuing cooperation with Iran in the energy sphere to the full extent, including in building light-water reactors," Russian Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko told reporters Tuesday.

Moscow says all nations have the right to peaceful nuclear power program, and favors a diplomatic solution to Iran’s nuclear issue.

However, Russia -- a veto-wielding permanent member of the UN Security Council -- has remained vague on whether it plans to support the US-pursued sanctions Iran.

Nuclear armed powers Britain, France and the United State accuse Iran of using its civilian nuclear energy program as a front to cover a drive for developing nuclear weapons.

Iran has stressed its right to a civilian nuclear program as member of the International Atomic Energy Agency and a signatory of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
