Aziza Mustafazadeh: I dream to see one morning that all wars were ended in the world

It is not accidental that my father died on the stage. Despite fixed schedule, world-famous Azerbaijani Aziza Mustafazadeh, who has been living in Germany for long years, has given an exclusive interview to APA on the eve of her father’s 70th anniversary. The jazz performer, who usually meets with foreign media representatives and gives interviews for money, proved her love for Azerbaijan by giving disinterested interview.

15:54 / 16.03.2010 -The 70th anniversary of the honorable representative of Azerbaijani jazz, your father Vagif Mustafazadeh will be marked. The anniversary of the world-famous jazzman will be marked in Heydar Aliyev Palace on the highest level. The aim of your visit to Azerbaijan is to participate in this event. How do you assess the preparations for the event?

-I am satisfied with the preparations. The most famous jazz performers of the country will perform today. I personally participated in the rehearsals and can say that the event will be better than it is expected. Everyone, who participates in the preparations, is very responsible. Of course, I should note Gulchohra Shafiyeva.

-As far as I know, you will present a different program today. How will you surprise your compatriots?

-Let it be my little secret. It becomes uninterested when surprises are publicized beforehand. I can only say that those who understand my music will be pleased.

-Though you do not give interview, we know that you come to Baku to visit your father’s grave every year. Whom do you meet when you visit Baku secretly?

-I often meet with Farhad Badalbayli, Nuru Ahmadov and several persons close to our family. I do not have many acquaintances in Baku, but I never forget the persons who are close to my heart.

-Once Vagif Mustafazadeh’s creative activity was not assessed unambiguously. Most even did not accept him. Once you were not accepted either…

-The real hero dies in battle. The people assess him though it is late. As the saying goes, better late than never. The people always loved Vagif. Sometimes innovators are not appreciated in time. It is not accidental that my father died on the stage. Throughout the history extraordinarily talented persons were not appreciated unambiguously. Once world-famous Bach, Mozart, Chopin were not appreciated. Such people always suffered. Even that’s why they die suddenly. Despite all this, we should be grateful to the people. My father is not alive, but his works live in hearts. I think they will live for a long time… I am glad that the Azerbaijani people are able to appreciate Vagif Mustafazadeh. It is not accidental that Heydar Aliyev kept my father’s creative activity in the focus of attention and said “Green lights to this handsome fellow from Icherisheher!” After his words attention and care for my father increased. Ilham Aliyev also listened and is now listening to my father’s works. If he had not been interested in my father’s activity, the head of state would not have given orders to hold his jubilee on the highest level.

-It is no secret that you left Azerbaijan as your creative activity was not appreciated. Much time has passed. Do you intend to return to Azerbaijan and live here?

- If I return to Azerbaijan and live here, then I will do less for culture and music of my homeland. We must be realist. Imagine that how difficult is the preparation and overcome long distances for my concerts abroad. At least it is 5-hour flight between Azerbaijan and Europe. Which organism can bear these difficulties? I must always live in a common division. That is why I visit Baku periodically. Though it is my wish to wake up every morning in sunny Baku and look at Caspian Sea, I must reject it for the development of our national culture. But one must carry national culture country-by-country. Artists can demonstrate their sceneries in other countries. But everything is different in music. Musicians must live abroad for on a world scale representation of the national culture of his/her country. If I didn’t wan tot represent Azerbaijani music abroad I would always live in homeland and was a common pedagogue. And that is very boring, one-sidedness for me. I think that creative person mustn’t stay inactive. If my father was alive, he would support my opinion on “not to work” in Azerbaijan. Because, he was a supporter of showing Azerbaijani music in the whole world.

- Would you like to share this stage with your father and celebrate this day together?

-I always feel Vagif cordially at all stages where I perform. But I would give everything to celebrate this day with him corporeally. Even I am ready to draw a line over all gained achievements. If only he was here and saw great and sincere love towards him.

-How do you see the political, cultural life of Azerbaijan from Europe? Generally, are you informed about the last incidents in the country?

-I often try to keep information about Azerbaijan in the focus of my attention. And we know that the cultural life of Azerbaijan is always seething.

-Do you have relations with your musician sister Lale Mustafazadeh?

-To tell the truth, no. though I have looked for her many times, all my efforts were in vain. But I am sure that she is okay. I wish all her works be always okay.

-You love your mother very much, I think only because of this your only producer is your mother. You don’t believe others, do you?

-Ask this question my father… He was always being with my mother too. It is true that, I don’t believe others. Your mother will never betray you. I am thankful Ms. Eliza for her care. I don’t like word “training” and I am against performance by note. That is why I used to perform Bax’s works with improvisation. My great unhappiness is that I feel people. Sometimes one can hurt another person by laughing, and that it wouldn’t be forgotten for a long time. One can injure another person even among the flowers. May be that is why I love flowers. I’m sorry for them. They also have a right for living.

-And how do you remember your father?

-Vagif was a real Azerbaijanian. His inner life and outlook give opportunity to say it. Everybody loved my father; his art was on the focus of attention not only in Azerbaijan, but also in former Soviet Union countries- Ukraine, Armenia, Russia, Georgia. Each of us loves our country. If we other countries and nations love our music it is our success. I am happy that, I remember my father as a beloved person. He was an inextinguishable sun.

-What does world-wide famous Aziza Mustafazadeh need?

-I need my father. But on the other hand, my father is in my inward. This double feeling gives me stimulus to live and create.

-You are honorary artist of Azerbaijan. What do you think is it enough for Aziza, who conquered the world with her performance?

-Sincere love of everyone, who is around, is appreciable for me. It is enough for me to win the audience’s love. Other things have formal character and I am always against the formality. The title doesn’t change anything. I don’t attach importance to such things.

-We hear that you don’t accept invitation of any country. There was invitation from Armenia and you rejected it…

-My managers are working with the concert proposals. I don’t deny that they also like my performance in Armenia and even Armenians are attending my concerts abroad. I am not aware of this proposal. I can’t reject the invitation because of traveling, climate problems of that country and if I ma busy.

-Probably you know about the Nagorno Karabakh problem despite that you are living abroad…

-This is a problem of all Azerbaijanis over the world. I am aware of this injustice. I am always keeping this issue in the focus of my attention. I taped Khojaly composition on the eve of release of my album Always. I prepared this composition with musicians of other countries and despite that they don’t know Azerbaijani language they learned this problem via the language of music.

-What is a big dream of Aziza Mustafazadeh?

-I dream to see one morning that all wars were ended in the world and that all people become friends to each other. It will serve only the development. People have to love each other and not to live with a problem of dividing the world. The world is indivisible. I wish only peace to the world.

-How are the foreign musicians performing Azeri music?

-Not everything depends on my efforts. The musicians are interested in doing this job. The foreign musicians in my trio love Azerbaijani music. Our folklore music caused tears in the eyes of Al Di Meola when we were working on the album. It was no easy for him to perform this works.

-What are your creative plans in the future?

-I have many plans, ideas, but everything depends on the proposals and circumstances. I am planning new tapes and concert programs. They are making film about me, but I wouldn’t like to give details.
