Quake devastates Haiti, hundreds dead and injured


Aftershocks as strong as 5.5 was felt throughout the area. The quake destroyed a number of buildings, including the presidential residence, parliament building and tens of other administrative buildings, leaving many people immured under ruins. It is strongest quake in the Haitian history. Several countries have expressed their willingness to assist Haiti in rescue operations. US have already sent a brigade of 72 rescuers and 48 tons of humanitarian assistance.
The scale of natural disaster was not specified yet. The quake seriously damaged communication lines leaving disaster areas in isolation. Authorities and experts don’t rule out that death toll will rise to one thousand. According to the latest reports, UN mission’s building was also destroyed as a result of the quake. A number of UN workers are still missing. The World Bank also reported about destruction of its building in Port-au-Prince.
