Japan Airlines to speed up mass job cuts ‎

Japan Airlines Corp. plans to slash its personnel by 16,500, or roughly one-third of its existing workforce, during the current fiscal year, according to a report Wednesday. The Nikkei business daily reported the cuts were originally slated to take place over three years. JAL, which filed for the Japanese equivalent of bankruptcy protection in January, is due to submit its rehabilitation plan in June, and is also ditching unprofitable routes and and selling off its older aircraft. The carrier is now soliciting voluntary retirements but will consider furloughs, work-sharing and dismissals if that prove insufficient to meet the planned workforce reduction, Market Watch reported.

Japan Airlines Corporation has been in operation since 1951.
